You're exactly right!!! I wish the Gentoo manual had mentioned it.
It could've saved me some hours of aggravation. What I did was exit the
enviroment (exit command) and performed yabootconfig through the mount points
i.e. cd /mnt/gentoo/dev/hda#. BTW, I also ran into the issue of Gentoo booting
and not being able to open the filesystem on /dev/hda2. Credit to Gentoo Forums
for the tip. It seems that you have to comment the boot partition or
Gentoo will always try to mount it on startup (another point that should be
made in the manual). Thanks again for the help, I really appreciated it.
Now for getting xorg-x11 to work.
